The Benefits of Food Tracking

In this post, I am going to write about the benefits of counting calories to help you reach your goals.

Counting calories and tracking your intake gives you a good picture of where you are currently at compared to where you need to be to achieve your goal.  A lot of people eat more than what they realize, and before you start making changes to your eating habits, it is important to know where you are starting from.

It can give you a great insight into your habits around food, for example, you may find that you are always eating too much or craving certain foods at a particular time of day or when you do certain things.

If you are not getting the results you are after or you have hit a plateau, it is easy to go back through your records and see where you can make some changes to get back on track.

It can really open your eyes up as to what an appropriate serving size is, as well as what serving sizes listed on food labels actually look like, (a lot of the time they are much smaller than you would think).

Even if food labels are not 100% accurate, if you are being consistent and eating the same amount of that food each time, even if the number is off, your being consistent with your intake and know that you can always adjust accordingly if you need to.

Most of the time just the act of tracking your food intake is enough motivation to make you want to eat better, I mean who wants to log that they ate a whole family size block of chocolate?

Look out for my next post coming soon where I will discuss the disadvantages of counting calories.
